The magnificent underwater world of Zanzibar

Idyllic beaches, forests with lush vegetation and historical monuments: what you see above the surface of the ocean in Zanzibar is far from being everything: dive underwater and the Indian Ocean will spread out in front of you like an aquarium full of bright colors! The water is always around 27 C, with excellent visibility, sometimes up to 60 m deep.

The coral reefs near Stone Town

To find beautiful spots for diving, you don't need to go far. Just off the coast of Stone Town, the lively historical core of Zanzibar Town, there are some wonderful diving sites: The reefs of Murogo, Pange and Nyange islands are as busy as the city streets! The maze-like coral formations are habitats for large schools of brightly colored marine fish, including stingrays, moray eels and puffer fish. The dive sites near Murogo are simply called 'Aquarium 1' and 'Aquarium 2' - that says it all!

Sea turtles and a beautiful wreck

Bawe Island also offers beautiful coral reefs. Due to its shallow location with a maximum depth of 18m, the island is suitable for beginners and advanced divers alike. The coral wall on the north side is a popular hiding place for octopuses, and with a little luck you might even encounter some sea turtles! If you like to dive deeper, you can explore the Royal Navy lighter, an imposing shipwreck that is home to large groupers and moray eels.

Caves and giants in Mnemba

Near Mnemba Island, off the rougher east coast of Zanzibar, lies the so-called 'big wall'. This popular dive site for advanced divers rises 60 meters above the seabed and features a series of caves ideal for exploring. From October to December, a significant population of whale sharks can be found in the waters around the island: an excellent opportunity for a close encounter with the gigantic fish, which can reach a length of up to 12 meters! Fortunately, they are harmless.
